| Out Patient vs. Residential | Residential | | Reality Based | Artificial Environment | Cost Effective | Expensive | Individually Focused | Herd Mentality | Private | Public | Short to Medium Term | Long Term (Forever) | Integrated with your life | Segregated from life | Less Disruptive | More Disruptive | Family Involvement | Isolation | Customized | One-Size-Fits-All | Adjustable | Rigid | Change Based | Disease Based | Optimistic | Pessimistic | Recovered | Recovering | We provide out-patient treatment because we believe that your success depends upon changing your alcohol based behaviors while maintaining and enhancing your life, not by taking a vacation from real life and expecting that to last. Anyone can change most any behavior given the right surroundings, but few can maintain change when they return to the usual realities of daily life. Vacations are nice, but it's cheaper and more fun to take them as such. Residential treatment is also very expensive, both in out of pocket cost (currently up to $110,000 for 30 days) and, for most people, in lost income. At one third to one tenth the price, out-patient is much more cost effective. Spend you money enhancing your life, not in escaping from it for a brief spa experience. Out-Patient services are also individually focused. In order to help you we must consider not just your dependencies, but also your strengths. Treatment is based on you, not the application of some dubious model and the process of contorting you to fit. You are not like everyone else and alcohol abuse is not an equal opportunity problem. You shouldn't be lumped in with others, nor is your solution apt to be an off the shelf remedy already available free in a church basement near you. If it was, you wouldn't be reading this. Our Out-Patient services are private and confidential. No insurance billing records will surface later to haunt you. No one you meet in a residential setting will appear to bother or threaten you. You will not show up on 60 Minutes - at least not with an addiction label. Out-Patient is term limited, in our setting. Two to four weeks of intensive assessment, planning, structuring, and appropriate therapy, another four to eight weeks of supportive therapy and adjustment, and six to eight months of follow-up at your discretion. This can result in leaving alcohol abuse behind you. Residential treatment, on the other hand, typically lasts for thirty days, followed by six months of group and out-patient participation along with multiple 12-Step meetings every week, followed by life-long attendance at these same meetings. Out-Patient services are integrated into your usual life. We become a detour away from your drinking patterns while maintaining the other aspects of your life. Treatment is a change process that occurs and accommodates to the realities of your life. When you stop drinking other areas of your life will be affected and out-patient allows for the necessary micro-adjustments success will require. Residential isolates you, and those around you, from the effects of change thus leaving everyone ill-prepared for your return. It is hardly surprising that relapse is the rule, not the exception. As noted, out-patient preserves as much of your usual life and responsibilities as possible. Change is always somewhat disruptive, but changing,in place, minimizes the disruption as compared to making major changes in isolation and then thrusting them onto an unprepared family, friends, and employer. Out-Patient treatment facilitates family involvement when it's productive. It is fairly easy to work with spouses, friends, and others whom you, the client, want to involve in ways that are supportive. Again, residential tends to be exclusive and families are seen as disruptive. We want you to develop all of the cooperation and support you can muster during the early weeks, not to drive wedges between you and the people who have the most to gain and lose through your recovery. We will help you figure out your own unique life changing plans and actions. We have no vested interest in any program, model, paradigm, or cure. We know that almost anything works for someone and that no specific program works for very many people. That is why we are dedicated to helping you find Your Empowering Solution. It's yours! Not ours or theirs. Residential is based on "We have the answer for you." If you are willing and able to be contorted to fit their model they may be right for you. Our work with you is adjustable as you progress and circumstances change. As alcohol use fades into history other concerns and considerations will no doubt emerge and we are prepared to help you discover your way through them too. Again, we will help you find your solutions and not just fend off your questions with accusations of "intellectualizing" or the forever unhelpful mandate that you attend more meetings and stop asking questions. We welcome questions, even when we don't have answers. Our services are based on the belief that you can change, can leave a dependency behind and be an ex-drinker just as many of us have become ex-smokers. It's something you once were but are no longer. It's another activity which has used up its share of your life and you have moved on. It isn't a disease with which you must do dreary battle for the rest of your life. It's a behavior overcome. You can be proud of having vanquished a powerful foe rather than being embarrassed over being weak and powerless. We are optimistic about your chances for recovery and want you to be too. Optimism is healthy, active, and successful. Pessimism is unhealthy, depressing, and the road to relapse. We suggest that you not give alcohol more power then it deserves or yourself less credit. It's a tough choice and a hard pattern to change, but it isn't worthy of expensive retreats or lifelong penance. You can recover, just as cancer patients do and smokers do. You can be done with alcohol as a part of your life. You can leave it behind instead of being someone whose status is permanently in doubt and who will be forever relapsing. You can be the winner.
